On
October 11, 2024, a delegation from Bulgaria’s higher education sector visited
Sokhumi State University. Prior to the ceremony, the guests toured the
Bulgarian auditorium. The event began with the national anthems of Bulgaria and
Georgia.
Professor
Indira Dzagania, Head of the Department of International Relations and
Intercultural Communications at SSU, welcomed the distinguished visitors and
expressed gratitude for their active participation in collaborative projects
and their successful outcomes. The event was graced by the Ambassador
Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Bulgaria to Georgia, His Excellency
Veselin Valkanov, a long-time friend of Sokhumi University who has played a
significant role in fostering Bulgaria-Georgia relations. The collaboration
between Bulgarian higher education institutions and SSU includes joint
educational, scientific, and cultural projects.
The
purpose of the Bulgarian delegation’s visit was to familiarize themselves with
Georgia’s education system. Several speakers shared insights on the subject,
including Mindia Okujava, Head of the Science Development Department at the
Ministry of Education, Science, and Youth of Georgia; Sophio Gelashvili,
Coordinator of International Partnerships and Projects Development at the
International Education Center; Tanya Mihailova, Deputy Minister of Education
of Bulgaria; and Professor Yanka Takeva, Chair of the Bulgarian Teachers’
Syndicate.
Bulgarian
language has been taught at Sokhumi State University for several years. Ivana
Petkova, a lecturer in Bulgarian language and literature at SSU, gave a
presentation titled "Bulgarian Language and Literature at Sokhumi State
University." SSU newspaper editor and poet Robert Meskhi also read his own
poems translated into Bulgarian. The event was creatively organized by SSU
students, who received a warm applause from the Bulgarian guests.
