On
November 1, 2024, Sokhumi State University welcomed the newly elected Chairman
of the Government of the Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia, Levan Mgaloblishvili,
the Minister of Education and Culture of Abkhazia, Davit Morgoshia, and the
First Deputy Minister of Finance and Economy, Lasha Dolbadze.
The
event began traditionally with the national anthem of Georgia. Rector Professor
Zurab Khonelidze addressed the attendees, congratulating the new leaders of the
Abkhazian Government on their appointments. He emphasized the importance of utilizing
the resources of both Sokhumi State University and the Abkhazian Government for
the country’s benefit.
Rector
Khonelidze stated, "The country has entrusted you with great
responsibility. I hope that under your leadership, radical changes will occur
to help reclaim occupied Abkhazia. I believe that, together, we can initiate
new and healthy processes to restore the territorial integrity of our nation.
SSU is a place where peace processes can begin, and we have reinforced this
mission at the university. We look forward to a close and fruitful
relationship."
Levan
Mgaloblishvili, Chairman of the Abkhazian Government, also addressed the
audience, expressing his honor at being present and highlighting the significance
of Sokhumi State University. "This university is a strong link between
Georgians and Abkhazians. The restoration of our country's unity greatly
depends on the processes taking place here at SSU, and we will do everything
possible to define effective ways to restore our nation's unity."
Davit
Morgoshia, Minister of Education and Culture of Abkhazia, discussed updates in
the higher education system, student scholarships, and the achievements of
SSU’s outstanding students. He also shared plans for the future of education in
Abkhazia and pledged to support the university’s positive initiatives.
The
event concluded with a screening of the song " Nightingale with a broken wing,"
performed by Murman Jinoria and Natia Todua, produced with support from the
university. The celebration ended with a performance of the "Georgia"
dance by SSU’s student choreographic ensemble.
It
is worth noting that the newly appointed leaders of the Government of the
Autonomous Republic of Abkhazia began their introductory visits from Sokhumi
State University.
