Professor Thomas Hoeren Named Honorary Doctor of Sokhumi State University

On November 14, 2024, Dr. Thomas Hoeren, a distinguished professor from the Faculty of Law at the University of Münster (Germany), was awarded the title of Honorary Doctor by Sokhumi State University.

The event was opened by the Rector of Sokhumi State University, Professor Zurab Khonelidze, who welcomed the guest of the university. In his opening remarks, Professor Khonelidze highlighted Dr. Hoeren's remarkable academic career and his significant contributions to the university.

"There is a special moment in our university today," said Professor Khonelidze. "On the recommendation of the Faculty of Law and Diplomacy and the decision of the Academic Council, we proudly welcome the renowned German scholar, Professor Thomas Hoeren, into the Sokhumi State University family. Our country is often described as pro-European, but I believe this definition does not fully capture Georgia's position. Georgia is not merely pro-European - it is the cradle and foundation of European civilization. We have much to learn from Europe, but Europe also has much to learn from us. I know that Professor Hoeren shares this vision, which is why we value his support and friendship so deeply. We are also aware of his positive view of Georgia, of Sokhumi State University, and its academic community. This mutual respect is the foundation of our strong and warm relationship."

Professor Khonelidze also emphasized Georgia's aspirations to become a full member of European and Euro-Atlantic institutions, noting that the country is committed to this goal within its capacities. He called on Europe to reciprocate this desire for cooperation, stating, "Today, not only will you be honored as an honorary doctor, Professor Hoeren, but we also hope that you will become an ambassador for Sokhumi State University in Germany - at the University of Münster - introducing the German public to our institution and our innovative concept of 'University Diplomacy.'"

Dean of the Faculty of Law and Diplomacy, Professor Vepkhvia Gvaramia, also spoke at the event, praising Dr. Hoeren’s ongoing support of the faculty. He highlighted how, through Dr. Hoeren’s direct involvement, the university library has been enriched with the latest legal literature and that this collaboration will continue with new books arriving in the near future.

In his acceptance speech, Professor Thomas Hoeren expressed his deep gratitude for the honor. "It is with great pride and humility that I accept the title of honorary doctor from Sokhumi State University," he said. "I am truly honored to join such a prestigious academic community."

Dr. Hoeren was congratulated by the Chancellor of Sokhumi State University, Professor D. Jalaghonia, Professor E. Putkaradze; academic council member Professor L. Gabisonia; Chair of the Ethics Council, Professor G. Alania; and the faculty and staff of the Faculty of Law and Diplomacy.

This event marks a significant milestone in the strengthening of academic and diplomatic ties between Georgia and Europe, furthering the collaborative spirit between Sokhumi State University and leading European institutions.
